Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion is set about 15 years after Episode III and begins on the planet Lothal, which has been occupied by Imperial Forces, spearheaded by the powerful Sith. We quickly meet one of the main characters in this adventure, a 14-year-old orphan and thief named Ezra, as he spoils the plans of an outlaw group while they are stealing crates full of weapons from Imperial Stormtroopers. Ezra winds up back on the outlaws’ starship – Ghost – where he meets Kanan, one of the last remaining Jedi, Hera – the ship’s pilot, a warrior named Sabine, Zeb and their droid, Chopper. Soon he learns that Ghost’s crew is working to fight back against the Empire and help others in need. We are taken on a whirlwind journey filled with danger, excitement and the spark of rebellion.
Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion is a one-hour movie meant to lead into the Star Wars Rebels series, which premiers on Disney XD October 13th at 9:00 p.m. (EST). I have to admit the announcement of new Star Wars programming was a major reason behind why I continue to pay for cable TV. According to the source here, the majority of people are doing the same as me. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I wasn’t really sure what I would think of the movie. I love the idea of being able to share Star Wars with my kids in a more child-friendly format, but I was still hoping it would be dark enough to appeal to someone like me, who has a clear alliance with classic Star Wars. My friends know how much I love Star Wars, to the point where some of them have recommended that I get something like a Disney Plus VPN, just so I can stream Star Wars films and a lot more Disney movies. This may be something worth looking into, especially if the kids love this franchise as much as I do. When I received an invite to attend the Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion screening on Saturday in NYC I knew I couldn’t pass up the chance.
The boys were excited that morning, they’ve been watching Star Wars with me since they were old enough to sit up on the couch, so it wasn’t too hard to get everyone out of the house early. We arrived about an hour before the screening, but shortly after us some fans showed up in costume and we passed the time taking photos while my bean peered over my husband’s shoulder suspiciously at a boy in an excellent Jawa costume.
Once inside we had the opportunity to take photos with some Imperial Stormtroopers (well, at least those of us without any rebel alliances did), the biys made some Yoda ears out of construction paper, then watched a fantastic Star Wars Science demonstration by Mad Science NY, then J had a lightsaber painted onto his arm just before we were seated.
To say we were glued to the screen would be an understatement. Even the bean, who has never been to a movie before, sat in silence the entire time. I feel like a perfect balance was struck between being appealing and exciting for kids, yet reaming dark enough to satisfy long time fans as well. Even my husband – who’s exposure to Star Wars is usually the first few minutes of a movie followed by two hours of the back of his eyelids (guys, I swear he has other really great qualities that make up for it!) – loved it.
Mad Science NY performs some Star Wars science for eager onlookers!
