The Bean had a last minute playdate the other day. He loves to snack, and so does his friend, so I decided to put some of the last apples from our visit to Fishkill Farms to use and make these fun, tasty ladybug apples!
I love these because even our very little ones can help make them, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
Here’s what you need:
- Some apples
- Peanut Butter
- Chocolate Chips or yogurt covered raisins for the spots
- Raisins or grapes for the ladybug head
- Pretzel sticks of fruit leather for the legs and antennae
Rinse the apples and slice them in half. Fill a bag with a few tablespoons of peanut butter and cut a small hole in one end, this will make it easy to make peanut butter spots on the ladybugs.
Lay the two halves on a plate and cut them down the middle, separate them slightly to look like wings.
Using the peanut butter like glue, dot each wing and affix chocolate chips or yogurt covered raisins to the wings.
Use pretzel sticks, or cut fruit leather into small strips for the legs.
Attach a raisin or grape as the head and use some more fruit leather as antennae.
It only takes a few minutes and is so much fun! Of course the topping possibilities are endless: almond butter, nutella, mini marshmallows, cereal – I mean, just look at these faces. Eating fruit no less! The munchkin with the giant smile here is Dominic’s BFF visitng on a mommy-blogging playdate and you can check out some of her adventures over on School Yard Style!
I love that these ladybug apples are so simple even The Bean can get involved making them. As a family that loves to cook together I get really excited over something simple enough that a two year old can take part in making. And even I love eating these because I’m pretty sure apples + peanut butter + a little bit of chocolate is pretty much the reason snacking was invented.
And I can’t get enough of these peanut butter-y smiles! What would you put on some ladybug apples? Let me know in the comments!
They look delicious, I bet they would be good with Nutella instead of peanut butter too.
That’s a great idea!
