Can you tell September is just around the corner? I’ve been sharing a lot of Back to School printables lately, maybe because one of my younger boys is heading to Kindergarten and I’m feeling a little sentimental this year.
I know he’ll be great, and he’s already so excited… I am too, I’m looking forward to spending some one on one time with my youngest, who still has at least one year before he’s off to any kind of school. His brothers have turned him into a wild beast of a child and I intend to civilize him again over the next year!
But there are still moments where I think I forget how old the boys are getting and just want to keep them all to myself for a little longer. Instead of smothering them with overbearing love, I make printables, like these and my Last Day of School Signs, Superhero Lunch Box Notes and Inspirational Lunch box Notes!
I love the way this First Day of School printable chalkboard sign came out in their back to school photos, and it will be a nice reminder of their favorite hobbies, colors and dreams as they get older.
These signs print at 8X10 and can easily be made into sturdy photo props with an inexpensive matte frame like this one.
I recently posted my About Me Back to School signs, but I really felt like I wanted to create something completely new this year. Unlike my other signs you can personalize these Printable Chalkboard Signs for your child!
I made these printables in both primary and pastel colors, so there’s something for everyone!
Read the instructions for downloading and editing them below, then come back and share your best brownie recipe with me, because I lost my go-to bake sale recipe in the move and I’m going to have some seriously disappointed kids in a week or so.

Customizing these signs is really simple.
Save the image files below, open them in your favorite image editing software and use the text option to fill in the sign. Don’t have image editing software? Download Paint.Net for free, it is what I have used for years and it is very simple to learn.
If you want to use the same fonts that I have you’ll need to download them before opening the file! Here is a list of the (free) fonts I used:
DK cool crayon
KB Lucky Clover
KG Second Chances Sketch & Solid
KB Zipa Dee Doo Dah
Minecrafter
KB Fun House
If you have multiple children and want to save on printer ink you can always print a blank sign and put it in an 8X10 picture frame, using bright chalk markers to write on the glass and erasing in between children.
I love these chalk markers for their bright colors, but any craft store should carry a nice selection.
Click on the image below, then right click and save to download the image files!

Thanks!!!! I love this and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for!!! Stupid question… What kind of paper do you print it on? Thank you again!
Hi Tonya, Great question! I should have included this in the post… any paper works, but I prefer cardstock because it holds up better when the kids are taking pictures. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Thanks! I’m trying to figure out how to download the “girly” version of the blank one but it looks like both links are for the primary one? I could be wrong though.. Computers are not my strong suit… 😉
Could this be printed in photo form?
Yes, you can definitely print this as a photo. If printing from home make sure the “fit to page” of is not checked on your printer options screen or it will cut off the borders.
So, it looks like you have to pay to edit a document? Otherwise, I must not be doing it right. Thanks anyway! I love this!
Only using Adobe Acrobat. If you use photo editing software like Paint.Net you can add text for free!
Hi, it seems like i cant download it. is there a way that is easier? it doesnt give me the option to download
If you click on the image it will open up a larger version in your browser. Just right click and select ‘save as’. Then open the file on your computer to edit it!
Any chance you have this one is a “last day of school” version?
I don’t currently. I’ll look into making some matching last day printables in the future!
Did you make a last day of school version?
I was wondering the same thing! Have you created one for the last day yet? Any way to get a copy of this to edit the top section only from First to Last?
Hi Melissa! You can check out the last day of school version here:
http://bearhugsandblanketforts.com/last-day-of-school-printable-chalkboard-signs/
After I edit and put in my own info and try to print, it has a white border around it. Any way to get rid of the border so it prints on the whole 8 1/2 X 11 paper?
Thanks
Hi Kari,
These images were made to be printed at an 8X10 size, so that they would easily fit into a frame. Unfortunately, I think stretching them to print any larger will distort the image. I would recommend printing on 8X10 photo paper to avoid having to cut the border off.
Thanks for stopping by!
Do you have a last day of school version?
I don’t currently have a last day of school version, but I can definitely look into making matching printables for this!
Any chance you made a last day of school sign? Thanks!
Hi Kelly!
Thanks for being patient – I just posted a Last Day of School version! You can check it out here:

Could you tell me what font you used on the white font? I want to add almost to the age and I want it to match the white font, if possible.
Krystle,
I believe the white font is called ‘Little Miss Priss’, although I don’t remember exactly. I’ll take a look through some of my fonts to see if I can confirm that!
Okay. I would appreciate that!
I LOVE this! Thank you for sharing!!
The font is not “Little Miss Priss”… any chance you could check and see what you used? Thanks a bunch!!
I don’t get it….it does download as a pdf, but isn’t “editable” for customizing. I must be failing at an epic level because I can’t get it to transform in photoshop either. Ugh.
Hi Melinda,
This does require a subscription to adobe in order to edit the pdf. If you download the image file instead, then open it in photoshop or paint.net, you can use the text tool to add custom text to each area.
I downloaded Paint.net but now I don’t know where to begin! I uploaded the image that you have available here to edit but how do I change the wording?
Once you open the imagine in Paint.net use the text tool to insert your custom text in each area!
Hi,
Thanks so much for these, they’re great. I was wondering what font you used for “my favorite color is”???
Hi,
Thanks soo much for these, they’re great! Was wondering what font you used for “My Favorite color is”???
The font is unfortunately no longer available for download. I have found that Little Miss Priss is fairly close. I am working on new signs that will include only available fonts for next year.
Hi! I LOVE the sign for my son’s first day of Pre-K this week and was able to customize the image using picmonkey.com but when I printed an 8×10 to a local store, the resolution was so grainy and blurred, I couldn’t see it! Do you think there is something I’m doing wrong?
Thanks!
When you save the file from picmonkey, are you saving it with a high resolution? I typically save my picmonkey files as .png to get a good quality print.
Hi,
I love your signs and used them for my children’s first day of Preschool last September. Do you have any for the last day of school? Our little ones changed so much this year, I would love to make one for their last day of school and put their new likes on it.
Hi Lisa,
You can grab the last day of school versions here:

Is it possible to upload the same sign for a boy but for the last day of school?
I have both primary and bright colors available!
Last Day of School Printable Chalkboard Signs
I downloaded paint.net and figured out how to use that. I downloaded the different fonts that you used but I can’t figure out how to get the fonts to be used inside paint.net now =P
I see that I downloaded the fonts, but how do I access them inside paint.net in order to be able to use them.
thanks so much!
Hi Kylie,
If you go to the folder with the downloaded fonts and double click the fonts it will install the font. Once they’re installed they will show up in the list of fonts in paint.net!
Diana, I downloaded the Adobe version and downloaded and installed the fonts. I have adobe acrobat Pro but I am having trouble changing the text?! Any advise you can give would be great!
Hi Julia,
With adobe acrobat pro you should have the option to edit the PDF. Once you enable editing you can choose the text option and just move the box to the area where you want to add the text. If you’ve installed he fonts they should be available to use in the drop down!
Thank you for such a quick response! I had to choose the touchup edit tool, now its working! Love your site!
Any chance you have a program for editing that could be used on a Mac? I tried downloading paint.net but it is microsoft only.
I can’t figure out how to install the fonts. I downloaded them but they still arent showing up in my drop down on adobe.
Open your Downloads folder, find the fonts and open those folders. Drag the True Type or Open Type files to your desktop. Then open your Fonts folder in the Control Panel and drag them from your desktop to the Fonts folder. You should get a message that says “Installing fonts” HTH!
Hi! Thanks so much for posting these school signs- love them! I used Paint.net to customize them and they look great. I was looking to print this on black-chalkboard looking paper but when I removed the background color and tried to print on the black paper it really didn’t show up. Any thoughts or suggestions on how I could give it that chalkboard look? Thanks!
I wish I had a good answer for this, but I have a feeling the colors on this sign are just too dark to show up well on black paper! Have you tried printing the version of this sign with bright colors?
Love this template. I was able to download and use paint. net to edit.
A couple of questions:
When this prints does it use all black ink for the background? I am trying to figure out how much ink it will take to print this. I noticed someone had mentioned it did not print well on black paper.
Has anyone had this printed at an office supply store?
Is there anyway to get sized to 16 x 20?
Hi Valerie, thanks so much! This does use black ink for the background. I have not tried it myself, but others have said the text does not show up well on black paper. You may fare better if you purchase grey paper or cardstock and remove the background before printing, which you should be able to do in paint.net. I print three of these every year and don’t find it to be a huge amount of ink that I use. I don’t currently have a larger version available.
when i click on the matching last day of school poster only the primary color poster comes up, i was hoping for the purple and pink one…?
Thank you so much for this – I used it to decorate (and label) my daughter’s binder for her first day of kindergarten!
Thank you SO much for posting this and sharing! It made for adorable pictures and I got some much needed rest instead of staying up all night trying to make something not nearly as good!
Thank you for this comment, Tara! I’m so glad you liked the printable – hope you have an awesome first day!
Hi, What font is used for the favorite things headings?
Hi I went thru the comments so hope this was not already asked. But I downloaded paint.net, I have adobe and downloaded the fonts listed but cannot figure out how to use the downloaded fonts on either program? How do I get them?!
Thank you
Thank you! I was able to download and edit the signs with no problem. You saved me a ton of work!
So glad to hear that! Thanks for the comment!!
Hello!
Thanks for sharing these signs, they are awesome.
I saw them a few years ago when my 1st child went to JK, but I thought there was a powerpoint that went with it, explaining a few things… or am I wrong?
I’ve never had a power point here, but let me know what you’re having a hard time with and I can walk you through it!
This was an amazing post and so informative
