Summer for us is always a wild, unpredictable time. Family vacations, visits from far-away friends, last minute plans and late dinners becomes the norm and we relish the feeling of throwing routine to the wind and just soaking up the precious, carefree time we have with our kids.
After all, summer is for building the kind of memories we hope to talk and laugh about years and years from now, so we try not to worry about how much the unusual will wreak havoc on our usual schedules and routines and instead focus on making the most of our time together.
Days like these make me so grateful for having a good bedtime routine for the kids though. I’ve learned that a bedtime routine can follow you anywhere, and can provide consistency and comfort no matter how late it is, or how far away from home you are. It’s my Plan A and B for helping the kids drift off to sleep calmly and peacefully no matter what!
The best thing about having a bedtime routine? It’s good for you too. I know I’m always caught up getting the dishes done or picking up toys before bed – so sticking to a routine also forces me to hit pause on whatever it is I’m doing and dedicate some one on one time to the kids. That means even when I’ve been entertaining company all day I still get a chance to focus entirely on my little ones for just a bit. It’s a good way to end the night and we all sleep better for it.
If you have a newborn – this is an amazing time to start a bedtime routine they will grow up with! And if you already have older kids – it’s never too late to begin a new routine that makes bedtime easier and more comforting! The first thing you need to determine is what time your kids need to be in bed. For this, you can use something like Sleepify sleep calculator for kids. Once you know this, you can formulate the rest of the routine. I’ve had a bedtime routine for all four of my boys, and over the years it’s changed and adapted to fit our lifestyle and ours kid’s preferences. The one constant: everyone loves it.
Today I’m really excited to be partnering with JOHNSON’S® to share some bedtime routine tips that will get you started towards creating the perfect routine for your family and to talk about the completely reformulated JOHNSON’S® line. I think you’re going to love this because most of us already trust JOHNSON’S® and use their baby products in our homes, and now their baby line is reformulated to be even more gentle – with products that contain over 90% naturally derived ingredients and are free of any sulfates, dyes, parabens or phthalates! JOHNSON’S® has been here for generations, constantly improving and changing their products to meet the expectations and needs of new parents – and the entire line is available at Walgreens, so you know you’ll be able to get your favorite products just about any time and any where.
Choosing baby products is a big deal in our home, because we only want the best – wholesome, safe, tried-and-true products for our kids, and JOHNSON’S® has been just that for not only me, but for my mom and my grandma as well. JOHNSON’S® has become a brand that I know I can count on to constantly exceed safety and quality expectations and to help me be the parent I want to be – one who chooses gentle products that work exactly like i expect them to!
My OB, pediatrician and the hospital I trust for my children’s care use JOHNSON’S®, and I love being able to provide that same quality at home, especially when it comes to something as important as out bed time routine!
We like to start our bedtime routine with bath time. The kids are usually still wound up from the day, so bath time provides a nice transition from play time to bed time. They can still look forward to playing in the bath, while the warm water and suds help them wind down.
I use and love JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Bath because the relaxing, calming aromas help to soothe children before bed (and you’ll find them pretty soothing yourself as you help with bath time!).
I love to choose toys that keep their hands and minds busy, to get rid of that extra energy and the warm water and soothing scents do their job to calm – think strainers and cups to pour and play with the water.
When it comes time to wash I reach for JOHNSON’S® Baby Shampoo because it’s gentle on my little one’s sensitive curls and tear free for a happy bath time experience (and because I just love snuggling my little one to breathe in that clean scent!). These reformulated products come with a pump top, which I am so excited about, because it’s so easy to use when your hands are full!
JOHNSON’S® has been trusted by parents for 100 years, and as mom who only wants the best for my kids, I love that JOHNSON’S® is always working to improve the formula and design of their products to meet the standards and needs of parents today!
After bath time we brush our teeth as recommended by dentist Woodbridge and then get on our comfy pyjamas as I take a few moments to spritz some JOHNSON’S® Detangling Spray into my youngest son’s curly hair. It keeps his hair soft and tangles free even after sleeping on his wild mane and I love the time we spend with him snuggling on my lap as I comb his hair!
Break Out The Books
We keep a bookshelf stocked with bed time favorites that are short and sweet. The kids take turns choosing a couple of books and then we all cuddle into bed to read them.
If you have older kids, this is a great time to practice reading as well – pick a book of sight words and take turns, first you read to them and then they read to you. The kids usually develop a favorite that we read again and again, but it becomes a fun tradition – we have books that we read on certain holidays and special books for birthdays and big events! Not only will you be creating a special time together, you’ll also be laying the foundation for healthy reading habits and lots of positive associations with reading later on in life!
Tuck Them In
After story time the kids climb into bed and we make a big deal of tucking them in. That means lots of snuggles hugs and kisses from mom and dad, and making sure their covers are tucked in just right.
The kids always have “just one more thing” to talk about, so I use a small dry erase board in their room to write down their “bedtime thoughts” with the promise that they will be the first things we talk about when they wake up. This always helps to put their minds at ease for drifting to sleep.
This routine is so simple, and by packing just a few of our favorite bath products and books I can keep it the same no matter where we are! Of course accidents happen – like last week when we had company staying with us, and I was so busy entertaining that didn’t realize we had run out of JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Bath! It was already late, but thankfully my Walgreen’s always has my back and is completely stocked with everything I need for bath time!
A quick trip allowed me to stock up on JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Bath and Shampoo at an amazing price, since you can buy 1 JOHNSON’S® products and get 1 half off from now until 8/25 with your Walgreen’s Balance Rewards Card!
With my bedtime essentials in tow I was able to get back home and put the kids to bed in no time! Pretty soon school will start again and our weeks will fall back into a steady flow, and our bedtime routine will still be there giving my boys the comfort they need to clock in those precious brain-building bedtime hours.
I love knowing I can turn to Walgreens when I’m in a bind. Walgreens has been our go to pharmacy for years because we love their commitment to quality and attention to details. We always find shelved full of exactly what we need, friendly and knowledgeable staff and convenient hours and locations. As a busy mom I dread running from store to store trying to find what I need, and Walgreen makes sure I get exactly what I’m looking for and get back to enjoying my family in record time – so I can spend more time snuggling and less time shopping!
